It's worth it when the itinerary leaves the pavement: gravel or dirt roads, mountain or volcano climbs, or during the rainy season (May to November), when four-wheel drive gives you more safety and control on uneven surfaces or steep grades. An SUV has more ground clearance than a sedan and handles occasional gravel roads, beaches, or gentle mountain terrain well. A 4x4 adds four-wheel drive, built for uneven terrain, steep grades, or heavy rain. When the route combines city driving with some varied terrain, an SUV is enough; if the plan includes rural or mountain roads, the 4x4 is the safer choice.
